Charity Begins At Home

The phrase 'Charity Begins at Home' is a timeless British saying, but for eighty festive fundraisers in Canterbury home is half the world away.

On Friday 7th December eighty English language students from around the globe held a charity fair at Stafford House School of English in New Dover Road.

Students at the language school enjoyed learning Christmas Carols, watching their teachers perform in a pantomime and raising money through the sale of various international cakes and sweets.

The event raised £95, which was donated to The Scrine Foundation which has a centre in Station Road East, Canterbury.

Betty Dagistan, Activities Manager, said: "The students at Stafford House come from all over the world to learn with us and this means that we have incredibly rich and diverse backgrounds of culture and religion. As you can imagine many countries don't celebrate Christmas like we do in the UK, and for many of the students it's the first time they have encountered Christmas as we know it. At this special time of year many of the students wanted to remember those less fortunate than themselves and that's how the idea of a Christmas Fair came about.

Student Miki Ota, 23, from Japan said “We've been experiencing Christmas spirit UK style and wanted to give something back to the community we have been living in for the past few months. Even though it’s a little thing, it has made us appreciate and consider those in Canterbury who have nothing at Christmas time.”

New cafe at the School of English brings light refreshment for staff and students

Students at the School of English will soon have a new place to drop in and relax. Conveniently located between the School of English and the Head Office administration block will be a bright, modern café, the perfect meeting place for students. As well as quality coffee there will be a range of snacks and light meals, including salads, sandwiches, noodles, paninis and pastries.

The School Principal, Pat O’Donoghue explained: ‘Over the last 6 years Cambridge Education Groups has invested  in refurbishment projects to bring greater comfort and convenience to the students. CEG is now turning to new building projects, with the recent completion of Bridge House at CATS Cambridge and a new College cafeteria at CATS Canterbury, due for completion in summer 2008.’

From 2008 all adult students at the School will eat dinner and weekend lunches with their host families. On weekdays they will be able to sample the wide range of food shops, cafes and restaurants in the centre of Canterbury, just 5 minutes walk away. To give the students an even more convenient choice, the School of English is now opening its own café The CATS cafeteria will also benefit the junior and residential students at the School of English.
